This page describes Kikan’s developing approach. It is not legal advice and does not claim that Kikan is licensed, registered, certified, approved or supervised in any particular capacity. Applicable obligations depend on Kikan’s actual activities, counterparties, transactions and jurisdictions.

Compliance position

A document received is not a risk resolved.

Compliance requires context, consistency and decisions—not merely collected files.

Kikan’s approach is intended to consider who the parties are, who owns or controls them, who benefits, what authority they hold, where the material or opportunity originates and how value is expected to move.

The level of review should reflect the risk. Information may require confirmation, refreshment, escalation or qualified external advice, and Kikan may pause or decline an opportunity when concerns remain unresolved.

Eight review gates

The whole transaction must make sense.

The precise checks, evidence and approval level vary according to the activity, party, country, product and proposed structure.

01

Identity

Confirm the legal identity and reliable contact information of individuals and entities involved.

02

Authority

Understand who may act for each party and what supports that person’s mandate or representation.

03

Ownership and control

Identify relevant beneficial owners, controlling interests, beneficiaries and unexplained corporate layers.

04

Source and rights

Assess origin, ownership, licences, permits, chain of custody and authority to supply or present the opportunity.

05

Sanctions and integrity

Consider listed parties, indirect dealings, politically exposed persons, corruption, conflict and financial-crime risks.

06

Product and evidence

Review product form, markings, weight, quality claims, assay information and inconsistencies requiring verification.

07

Trade route

Understand export, import, customs, custody, security, transport, insurance and destination requirements.

08

Settlement

Establish approved accounts, payment purpose, currency, timing, third-party involvement and definitive commercial terms.

Controlled progression

Review is continuous until the activity is closed.

An earlier decision does not authorize a changed party, source, route, product, payment or transaction.

  1. 01

    Scope

Define the proposed parties, roles, activity, product, countries and commercial purpose.

    Know what is proposed
  2. 02

    Collect

Request proportionate corporate, ownership, source, product and transaction information.

    Build the record
  3. 03

    Assess

Test consistency, identify red flags and determine where further verification or advice is required.

    Understand the risk
  4. 04

    Decide

Approve with defined scope and conditions, escalate, pause or decline according to authority.

    Record the reason
  5. 05

    Monitor

Refresh time-sensitive information and reassess material changes before further activity.

    Keep approval current
  6. 06

    Close and retain

Document completion, withdrawal, rejection, reporting, unresolved conditions and retention requirements.

    Preserve the outcome

Counterparty transparency

The named company may not be the whole party.

Corporate registration confirms that an entity exists; it may not explain who owns, controls, represents or benefits from the proposed activity.

Kikan may request information about ownership structures, directors, authorized representatives, third parties, politically exposed persons, heads of international organizations, close associates or other persons relevant to the risk and applicable obligations.

Refusal, evasion, conflicting information or unexplained complexity may change the approval pathway or end the review.

Sanctions and anti-corruption

Direct and indirect risk both matter.

A transaction may involve restricted parties or activity through ownership, control, associates, intermediaries, financial institutions, services, goods or routes—even when the named counterparty is not itself listed.

Interactions involving public officials, licences, permits, customs, security, taxes or state-linked entities also require careful authority, payment and anti-corruption controls. Urgency or local custom does not justify an improper advantage.

Escalation questions
  • Who ultimately owns, controls or benefits?
  • Is any party, bank, route, service or activity restricted?
  • Does the transaction fit the party’s business and stated purpose?
  • Are officials, agents or intermediaries involved, and why?
  • Are payment instructions consistent and transparent?
  • What changed after the earlier review?

Cross-border execution

Commercial agreement does not replace regulatory clearance.

Each appointed participant remains responsible for its own legal and professional obligations.

Before movement

Define the route

Origin, destination, exporter, importer of record, product description, classification, permissions, carrier, security, insurance and custody.

Before settlement

Define the value flow

Contracting parties, invoices, currency, approved accounts, taxes, duties, fees, conditions, payment timing and third-party involvement.

Illustrative red flags

When the story and the evidence separate.

One signal may have an innocent explanation; patterns or unresolved contradictions require further attention.

Party and authority

  • Identity or ownership cannot be confirmed
  • Representative authority is unclear
  • Unexplained agents or public-official connections
  • Complex structure without business rationale

Product and source

  • Origin or rights change without explanation
  • Documents, photographs and product claims conflict
  • Unusual route, storage or custody arrangement
  • Pressure to avoid inspection or verification

Payment and behaviour

  • Third-party or unrelated bank account
  • Payment split without clear commercial purpose
  • Urgency designed to bypass review
  • Reluctance to provide required information

Clear boundaries

What this page does not claim.

01

It does not confirm that Kikan is registered with FINTRAC or any other regulator.

02

It does not confirm that a formal compliance programme has been fully implemented or independently tested.

03

It does not approve a supplier, buyer, country, mine, product, bank, route or transaction.

04

It does not replace legal, customs, tax, assay, banking, sanctions or other specialist advice.

05

It does not guarantee that every risk will be identified or that an approved activity will be completed.

Compliance questions

Direct answers.

Plain-language information for prospective counterparties and search systems.

What does Kikan review before working with a counterparty?

Review may include identity, authority, ownership and control, business purpose, source, rights, sanctions, politically exposed persons, product evidence, trade route, payment structure and other risk-specific information.

Does submission mean a buyer or supplier has been approved?

No. Submission begins a possible review. It does not establish approval, a relationship, product acceptance or transaction authorization.

Is Kikan registered with FINTRAC?

This website does not make that claim. Canadian obligations for dealers in precious metals and stones depend on actual business activities and applicable statutory criteria; Kikan must assess its status and obligations with qualified advisers.

Can Kikan proceed if a country is subject to Canadian sanctions?

Only activity permitted under all applicable laws may proceed. Country, party, ownership, goods, services, route and transaction restrictions require current assessment, and Kikan may decline or suspend an opportunity.

Why might Kikan request information again?

Identity documents, ownership, sanctions, political exposure, licences, product details and transaction conditions can change. Earlier information may no longer support a new or changed activity.
